Deutsche Aircraft Celebrates Richtfest for New Final Assembly Line in Leipzig – A Milestone for German Aviation

Leipzig, Germany, 14 November 2025 – Deutsche Aircraft, in partnership with Weerts Group, successfully hosted the Richtfest (topping-out ceremony) for its state-of-the-art Final Assembly Line (FAL) at Leipzig/Halle Airport. The event marked a pivotal moment in the industrialisation of the D328eco®, a next-generation 40-seater turboprop aircraft, and reaffirmed Germany’s position as a leader in sustainable regional aircraft manufacturing.

The ceremony was attended by key stakeholders including representatives from Weerts Group, Leipzig/Halle Airport and government officials, celebrating the progress of a project that is set to transform the aerospace landscape in Saxony and beyond.

A Hub for Innovation and Sustainability

The FAL, located on a 60,500 square metre site (which is the equivalent of eight football fields) is designed to be carbon neutral and fully digital. It features automated and driverless transport systems, energy-efficient battery-powered tools and augmented reality integration to enhance precision and transparency. Customers will be able to observe their aircraft being assembled in real time.

With an annual production capacity of up to 48 aircraft, the facility is creating between 250 and 350 highly skilled jobs, contributing significantly to the regional economy and reinforcing Leipzig’s role as a strategic aviation hub in Europe.

€100 Million Investment in the Future of Flight

Deutsche Aircraft has invested €100 million into the Leipzig site, underscoring its commitment to climate-friendly manufacturing and technological excellence. The D328eco, a modernized evolution of the Dornier 328, delivers 50% better fuel efficiency compared to regional jets in the same seat-size category, significantly reducing operating costs while supporting the transition to more sustainable aviation.

Celebrating the Milestone Together

Held on the morning of 13 November, Richtfest included speeches from Deutsche Aircraft’s leadership team, Weerts Group and regional partners. This was followed by a traditional topping-out ceremony featuring remarks from one of the construction workers. Following this, guests gathered for a networking lunch, reflecting on the significance of the milestone and the collaborative effort behind the facility’s development.

A Shared Vision: Perspectives on a New Era for Aviation

Olaf Lawrenz, COO of Deutsche Aircraft, emphasised the OEM’s commitment to building on a proven legacy. “This milestone is a testament to our team’s dedication and technical expertise. Building upon the robust foundation of the Dornier 328, we’ve integrated modern technologies to enhance efficiency and sustainability. The rollout reflects our commitment to delivering a next-generation aircraft that meets the evolving demands of regional aviation.”

Sebastian Böhnl, Leipzig Site Manager, reflected on the design philosophy and environmental targets of the new assembly line. “The Final Assembly Line is designed to be completely carbon neutral. We will generate approximately 750 kW of solar power through rooftop photovoltaics. From heat pumps and optional energy storage to green roofs and a hybrid timber-concrete construction, this investment is deeply embedded in a sustainable production ecosystem.”

“The Final Assembly Line has been developed and planned for the next generation of aircraft manufacturing. The focus is on the employees, with processes adapted accordingly. For example, materials are delivered directly to the workstation, and working heights are designed to meet the highest ergonomic standards.”

Yves Weerts, CEO and President of Weerts Group, added, “This collaboration is a cornerstone for our presence in Germany. We are proud to support Deutsche Aircraft in building one of the most advanced aircraft production facilities in the world.”

Götz Ahmelmann, CEO of Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG, concluded: “This facility will make Leipzig/Halle Airport a beacon for sustainable air transport and another symbol of Saxony's successful industrial development.”

Looking Ahead

Deutsche Aircraft expects the handover of the FAL from the end of 2025, with the production of the first D328eco aircraft beginning in early 2026. This milestone will not only revive aircraft manufacturing in the region but also set a new standard for sustainable aviation in Europe.

About the data:
- Source: Cirium
- Schedules data: full year 2019 vs. 2020 – excludes non-scheduled flying
- In-service data:
- For 2019 the data is dated April while for 2020 it’s dated October. We wanted to compare “shoulder month” to shoulder month, however April 2020 wouldn’t have captured the immediate impact of Coronavirus as our dataset classes aircraft as in storage after 3 months of inactivity.

DA Latest News in a Nutshell

New talent appointed to strengthen the Deutsche aircraft programme

As part of its continued support of Deutsche Aircraft’s D328eco aircraft programme, 328 Support Services GmbH recently appointed a panel of “talent experts” to further strengthen the overall team and ensure strong management structure and processes are in place across the D328eco development programme. Today we focus on the Engineering & Programme departments.

On the programme side, Mr. Peter Spyrka has been appointed Director of Programmes. Peter brings over 20 years’ experience in the global aerospace industry with engineering & development works on both civil and military aircraft programmes. Prior to joining Deutsche Aircraft, Peter worked at Airbus, leading the Hybrid Electric Propulsion System development programme for demonstrator projects. He also worked for Fairchild Dornier back in the late 1990’s.

In Engineering, Mr. Jean-Damien Mazeau has been appointed as our new Head of Propulsion Systems. Jean-Damien also brings more than 20 years’ aeronautical experience to Deutsche Aircraft, having built most of his career at Airbus. He was most recently involved with the A320neo’s entry into service, in charge of propulsion system’s global technical Support.

Last but not least, Dr. Stefan Brunner brings more than two decades of expertise and experience to his position as Head of Airframe. Throughout his career, Stefan spent more than 17 years working directly for the Airbus group where he was heavily involved with a wide variety of major engineering programmes on both commercial aviation and defence & space programmes. In his new role, Stefan will be responsible for design, analysis and modification of the D328eco airframe’s primary structure (Fuselage, Fairings, Wing, Empennage), as well as establishing new processes and procedures to complete aircraft development. Finally, he is responsible for ensuring compliance with the European Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) regulations.

In addition to Peter, Jean Damien and Stefan, we are also proud to announce that we have been busy hiring new talent from not only within Germany, but from all over the world. Coming from a variety of companies within the aerospace industry, we look forward to utilising our new team members’ skills and expertise to achieve the entry into service scheduled for 2025.

All are great assets to the current Engineering & Programme team and will, without a doubt, help support Deutsche Aircraft’s development programme over the coming years.
