Deutsche Aircraft announces Partnership with Weerts Group for Construction of Final Assembly Line for the D328eco™

Wessling, 01 October 2024 – Deutsche Aircraft, a leading manufacturer of regional aircraft, has announced a partnership with Weerts Group, a pan-European logistics and real estate infrastructure developer, for the construction of its state-of-the-art Final Assembly Line (FAL) for the D328eco aircraft. This collaboration is a significant achievement in the development of the D328eco programme and reinforces Deutsche Aircraft's commitment to innovation and sustainability.

The OEM broke ground for the Final Assembly Line at Leipzig/Halle Airport in May 2023. Frame conditions have since been laid and the official start of construction was announced during ILA 2024 in June. In the meantime, the ground field side has been completed and handed over. The FAL is set to become operational in the fourth quarter of 2025, as Weerts Group takes over the construction. With a total area of 60,500 square meters, the facility will contain the FAL, Flight Readiness Hangar, Logistics Centre, and Administration Building, creating a comprehensive infrastructure to support the production of the D328eco.

The new Final Assembly Line will incorporate cutting-edge technologies and processes, ensuring a 100% digital and paperless production environment. Automated and driverless transport systems will streamline operations, while automated parts and tool storage will enhance efficiency. The production line will be tailored specifically to the D328eco, optimising process flows, and utilising energy-efficient battery powered tools.

One of the key advantages of the Final Assembly Line will be its use of 3D models in production, and the possibility of integrating augmented reality technology. This innovative approach will enhance productivity and precision, further solidifying Deutsche Aircraft’s position as a leader in the aviation industry.

In addition to its advanced technological capabilities, the Final Assembly Line will prioritise sustainability and customer experience. The newly designed manufacturing tools, including tools for the fuselage, will be energy-efficient, contributing to a greener production process. The open and friendly factory will allow customers to witness the assembly of the aircraft firsthand, fostering transparency and trust.

The construction of the Final Assembly Line will create employment opportunities for 250-350 individuals to further boost the local economy in the Leipzig region. With a production capacity of forty-eight D328eco aircraft annually, Deutsche Aircraft aims to meet the growing demand for regional aircraft while maintaining the highest standards of quality.

Nico Neumann, COO of Deutsche Aircraft, highlighted the importance of this collaboration, stating “This partnership with Weerts Group signifies an important milestone in the industrialisation of the D328eco. Weerts Group brings a strong portfolio of experience as we construct the Final Assembly Line for Deutsche Aircraft. This is testament to our dedication to the success of the D328eco programme and its pivotal role in the aviation value chain in Europe and around the world.”

Yves Weerts, CEO and President of Weerts Group, remarked, “This partnership between Deutsche Aircraft, Leipzig Airport and our Group is a milestone in our development in Germany. Weerts Group is charmed by the confidence Deutsche Aircraft and Sierra Nevada Corporation have shown during negotiations and we are very happy to contribute to the realisation of this project. This collaboration is an absolute priority for our company, with Leipzig as an important anchor point to further develop our business in the German market.”

Götz Ahmelmann, CEO of Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG, added,“Leipzig/Halle Airport is a byword for successfully attracting businesses and innovation. The production of an environmentally friendly aircraft such as the D328eco perfectly matches our portfolio. The establishment of this production line marks a groundbreaking chapter for sustainable aviation, our airport, and the entire region.”

Deutsche Aircraft is excited to embark on this new chapter in its journey towards revolutionising regional aviation. The collaboration with Weerts Group will enable the company to deliver on its promise of a modern, efficient, and sustainable Final Assembly Line for the D328eco. With its advanced technologies, optimised processes and a commitment to customer satisfaction, Deutsche Aircraft is poised to shape the future of regional air travel.

About the data:
- Source: Cirium
- Schedules data: full year 2019 vs. 2020 – excludes non-scheduled flying
- In-service data:
- For 2019 the data is dated April while for 2020 it’s dated October. We wanted to compare “shoulder month” to shoulder month, however April 2020 wouldn’t have captured the immediate impact of Coronavirus as our dataset classes aircraft as in storage after 3 months of inactivity.

DA Latest News in a Nutshell

New talent appointed to strengthen the Deutsche aircraft programme

As part of its continued support of Deutsche Aircraft’s D328eco aircraft programme, 328 Support Services GmbH recently appointed a panel of “talent experts” to further strengthen the overall team and ensure strong management structure and processes are in place across the D328eco development programme. Today we focus on the Engineering & Programme departments.

On the programme side, Mr. Peter Spyrka has been appointed Director of Programmes. Peter brings over 20 years’ experience in the global aerospace industry with engineering & development works on both civil and military aircraft programmes. Prior to joining Deutsche Aircraft, Peter worked at Airbus, leading the Hybrid Electric Propulsion System development programme for demonstrator projects. He also worked for Fairchild Dornier back in the late 1990’s.

In Engineering, Mr. Jean-Damien Mazeau has been appointed as our new Head of Propulsion Systems. Jean-Damien also brings more than 20 years’ aeronautical experience to Deutsche Aircraft, having built most of his career at Airbus. He was most recently involved with the A320neo’s entry into service, in charge of propulsion system’s global technical Support.

Last but not least, Dr. Stefan Brunner brings more than two decades of expertise and experience to his position as Head of Airframe. Throughout his career, Stefan spent more than 17 years working directly for the Airbus group where he was heavily involved with a wide variety of major engineering programmes on both commercial aviation and defence & space programmes. In his new role, Stefan will be responsible for design, analysis and modification of the D328eco airframe’s primary structure (Fuselage, Fairings, Wing, Empennage), as well as establishing new processes and procedures to complete aircraft development. Finally, he is responsible for ensuring compliance with the European Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) regulations.

In addition to Peter, Jean Damien and Stefan, we are also proud to announce that we have been busy hiring new talent from not only within Germany, but from all over the world. Coming from a variety of companies within the aerospace industry, we look forward to utilising our new team members’ skills and expertise to achieve the entry into service scheduled for 2025.

All are great assets to the current Engineering & Programme team and will, without a doubt, help support Deutsche Aircraft’s development programme over the coming years.
