On the wings of a proud legacy: Deutsche Aircraft and the D328eco®

At Deutsche Aircraft, our declaration 'We are the future of flight' reflects our ambition and the remarkable legacy of the Dornier 328 aircraft, inspired by the visionary spirit of its founder, Claude Dornier.

The Dornier 328, a significant milestone in aviation technology, entered commercial service in October 1993. Today, approximately 150 of these aircraft are still in operation worldwide. Its modern successor, the D328eco, is set to elevate this storied legacy to new heights.
Thomas Ahn, Chief Engineer of the D328eco at Deutsche Aircraft, leads this exciting journey. With nearly four decades of aviation experience, Ahn began his career at Dornier in 1987 and was instrumental in shaping the original Dornier 328 concept. Today, he is a driving force behind the next-generation D328eco program, which he sees as an essential “return to the roots” of German aviation excellence.
“The Dornier 328 was the last clean-sheet design of a complete aircraft system developed in Germany,” Ahn asserts. This moment marked a significant turning point. Since then, much of our local expertise has either diminished or relocated. However, history has taught us resilience; after World War II, we had to rebuild our aviation capabilities from the ground up. “Now, we stand at a pivotal crossroads once more,” Ahn states with conviction.
Rebuilding German aviation leadership
This time, we are prepared to seize the opportunity. Deutsche Aircraft is committed to building on the Dornier 328 legacy by developing an innovative aircraft that perfectly merges efficiency with cutting-edge technology.
“This is our moment to re-establish ourselves as a modern aircraft manufacturer with full system integration capabilities right here in Germany,” Ahn explains confidently. “We use advanced 3D modelling, seamless data sharing with suppliers, and state-of-the-art communication tools to enhance our development efficiency.”
While we embrace digital processes, the foundation of Deutsche Aircraft is built on the invaluable knowledge of seasoned professionals—individuals who not only craft and design but also possess a deep, nuanced understanding of how systems, materials, and safety requirements interconnect.
“Aviation is the pinnacle of human engineering—the most complex technical product we can build. Its systems are comparable to those of a nuclear power plant, yet they must also take to the skies,” Ahn emphasizes.
Aircraft are more than machines; they connect people, cultures, and ways of life. At Deutsche Aircraft, our vision extends far beyond technical specifications. We are resolutely dedicated to reestablishing Germany as a powerhouse in aircraft manufacturing on the global stage, with products that embody quality, sustainability, innovation, and reliability.
Thomas Ahn is unwavering in his belief that we can achieve this goal, even in the face of higher production costs in Germany. “To gain a competitive advantage here, we must combine efficient methods with the ability to integrate highly complex products,” he asserts confidently.
The future takes flight in Oberpfaffenhofen
The legacy that began with Claude Dornier continues in Oberpfaffenhofen, where innovation thrives. Located just 30 kilometres west of Munich, this site—where Claude Dornier once had the courage to “dare the impossible to achieve the best”—stands as a testament to German aviation history. Oberpfaffenhofen is now the heart of Germany’s aviation industry, pulsing with courage, vision, and a clear and unwavering commitment: We are the future of flight.
The determination to fulfil this vision is palpable at Deutsche Aircraft, where over 550 professionals from more than 40 nations collaborate daily. Each member brings their expertise, united by one powerful goal: to launch the D328eco into the skies and, in doing so, to script a new chapter in German aviation history. The D328eco is designed not just to fly but to excel in economic efficiency, performance, and sustainability. It can operate on 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF-PtL), positioning it to lead the turboprop revolution.
As we approach the rollout of TAC 1, the first D328eco test aircraft, a new chapter begins—one that transitions Deutsche Aircraft from development to industrialisation.
